Removing programs from list in XP

I have a PC that I used personally that I'd like to repurpose and there are some things on there I'd like to keep on there, but I'd like to remove access from, for other users. I want to create another user account that removes access to some programs, so I don't have someone wasting time when I'm not over their shoulder, but I still want to access the programs when I'm using the computer.

I have created another user (in XP), and made it just a user, not an admin. So how do I remove programs from the program list and only leave that one account with a small number of options?

As an example, if I'm logged in, I might have 75 menu options. When I log in under the "new user" account, I'd like to have it show 12 menu items only (the programs I want them to have access to).

Is that possible in XP? If so, how?

Thanks!

Roper of Goats. Old ones.
There are local and global (all users) start menu folders. While you are logged on as yourself and not your restricted user, right-click on the Start button and select Explore...

This will open an Explorer window showing the contents of your local Start Menu with a sub-folder named Programs.

Look up the folder tree a bit and you will see a folder named All Users -- expand that to find a corresponding folder Start Menu/Programs.

Simply move all the desired icons and folders from the All Users/Start Menu/Programs folder to your own Start Menu/Programs folder.

<edit> not sure if this works with XP-Home

PERFECT! Thanks, that did exactly as needed.

I appreciate the help.

You should be aware that doing this does not actually block access for a user opening and running these applications. It merely is hiding them from the Start Menu. If you hide a program, such as Internet Explorer or Photoshop, using this method before, the user can still go to the Program Files folder for the application and run the program manually.

+1, you need to look into active domain directory

Thanks! The person using it isn't that smart, so we're all good there :)
