Removing vinyl letters from vinyl banner

Client brought us a previously made banner from somewhere else and needs a date change made to it. The lettering is cutout vinyl. It seems to me you can just pull the lettering off with your fingernail but dont want to experiment on this just yet. Is there a "better" method to doing this, maybe a heat gun or something?

Fingernail, heat gun, adhesive remover, alcohol, new date.

I like those 'lil chizzler" squeegees instead of picking with your finger nail. Once you get the slice/pull up under the corner of the letter technique down with the lil chizzler it goes pretty fast and smooth. However, if you only have a few letters to pull your finger nail works fine.

If there to cheap to have a new banner made, I would just print a new date and stick it over the old one.
