Yeah still doesn't change the fact that one of those bad boys survived a tsunami, and the other survived a freakin nuke. That's pretty impressive craftsmanship. They truly don't make them like they used to.

Went to Japan last year, and the torii are as impressive as you'd think, considering the photos. Most small and average size torii are just made out of wood, though they're remarkably stable. Some of the larger, better known ones are completely solid cast. The materials vary

We came upon a decent sized one on a pilgrimage path in a mountain village, that was described as the largest copper torii in the country. No matter where we went, there was something that left our jaws open.
