Roland Camm jet 60 CJ-60 "Capping Error"

I hope I am in the right place. I just bought this machine used and need some advice. It's been sitting for a few years, but prior to this was the primary cutter for a sign business. When I start it up, it goes through a rather lengthy startup process where it intermittantly sounds like it is priming or turning rollers. I am told this is normal. However, after awhile, it beeps and gives the error message "Capping Error" Turn off power.

I simply want to cut with this, I have no interest in printing with it. I am told this can be done. Has anyone seen this message or knows what to do? how do i disable the print head or printing of this unit and simply use it as a vinyl cutter?

Thanks so much for your help.

You could try this:

Have the main power on but not the front power button. Then hold down the following: Arrow buttons Left, Up, Right and it should say somthing possibly like "initializing the limit" then hit enter.

There are three other things listed that may be a broken sensor, locking mech, or capping position out of position.

This is from the SC500 manual so there is a chance it may work on your older printer as well.

Thanks so much. I stopped the error from happening. However, I'm not sure if I've fixed the issue. I tried doing what you said, but I think the head was not going totally into the capping position. It seemed to not be completely seated on the caps. So while it was starting, I pushed the printhead over and it popped off the cutter (seperated from the magnet) after this happened, the motors stopped and I got a prompt to set my sheet type (edge/roll/piece). I am hoping that as long as the head is sitting there, i won't need to worry about it engaging with the cutter since I won't be printing? Artbot thinks there must be something gummed up to prevent the head from entirely sitting on the caps on it's own. What do you think?

is it possible to have the WRONG caps?? too small for the heads? Don't know anything about this machine but maybe a possibility??

I think your printer is the 4 color with the black head as the single and the 3 color in the other head. You may need to do a flushing adjustment by way of the service menu. Do you know how to get into the service menu.

If not I think it would be similar to the CJ ans SC 500. With main power on but the pannel power off, make like "S" and "V" shape on the key pad:

up,left, right, down, left, down, right then all three (left, down, right) and power on. Might take a few tries to get it.

If the flushing adjustment is there it will move the heads off the captops and stop, then you use the key pad (up down I think) to just get the black head to touch the left edge of that captop. Then hit enter and it should set itself.

If a head had ever been replaced and not set in propper you would notice one of the heads lower than the other. If they are both visually about the same you should be ok there.

Did you end up doing that "initializing the limit" to get things to work or have you not done that? If not do it or the capping station will not line up.

I think The CJ-60 was one of the first printers out by Roland it's a 4 color printer? Where did you buy it from, couldn;t you ask the company that sold it to you how to just cut with it.
