I'm getting a few of my Roland Eco Sol Max cartridges saying they are empty yet when I remove them and feel the weigh you can tell there is lots of ink still in them! Anyone else run into this? Any solutions?
Thanks

I'm having that problem now, but don't have any solutions. We have a technician coming next Tuesday to look at that and some other issues. I'll let you know what he says, in case you're still having the problem then. Our printer is Roland Soljet Pro XC-540. But hopefully someone else will have a quicker answer for you!

Hi Julie, I have the same machine so let me know what they say! Thanks

Check the tab on the side of the cartridge. Could be sticking out just enough to trigger empty warning. Could also be the sensor that reads the chip on the cartridge. Had that with my Roland. Fix was purely by chance and consisted of forgetting to reinstall a small guide piece on top of the cartridge slot. That allowed the cart to make better contact with the chip sensor. YMMV.

This is almost always caused by a poor cap top seal. The printer counts down the ink it uses (or actually thinks it uses) during cleaning cycles. If the seal isn't good (due to poor maintenance, age or defective cap tops, the pumps suck air rather than ink. Once it writes down the chip, there's no way to correct it. When you put in a new cartridge it will know that it's full and the cycle starts all over again.

The minor possibilities would be a bad chip reader, a bad board or cable somewhere in the chain from the chip reader to the main board.

The tab on the side should only stick out if the ink is truly gone. Otherwise the ink in the bag should hold it inside, unless you rock the ink to the back end of the cartridge - then you may see it stick out. This tab usually fails in the opposite manner. You run out of ink and the tab fails to extend and you keep printing without the printer understanding that it's run out of ink.

Good Luck and clean your cap tops and print heads.

We always pull the cartridge out, give it a shake, put it back in, and then continue printing. Usually works for at least a few more minutes.

Thanks for all the info! So being there is alot of ink in the cartridge, you can feel the difference to a actual empty one, I have kept printing with it. The only warning I get is on Versa Works but I just keep hitting print anyways... I bet the cartridge is at least half full still, lots of ink in it... I hate to just throw it away.....I have rotated the cartridge to the other yellow spot and get the same reading on ink level... so I'm guessing it's the sensor chip on the cartridge....???

Could you tell me what firmware has been installed into your printer? Go to MENU -> SYSTEM INFO -> FIRMWARE

The thing is when you update a firmware in your printer it gets keys for IC CHIPS. Therefore if you haven't recently updated the firmware your printer is unable to identify those chips.

In case you're looking for the latest firmware, follow the link http://download.rolanddg.jp/en/color.html

If you have Roland Soljet Pro XC-540 there is the latest firmware http://download.rolanddg.jp/en/upgrade/firm/PRO3Firm470.exe (XC-540MT, XC-540, XJ-740, XJ-640, XJ-540)
and the manual http://download.rolanddg.jp/en/upgrade/firm/firminstaller_USE_manual.pdf

Updating process of the firmware on Rolands should look like on the video:

p.s. After updating the firmware I would suggest you shut down the printer and turn it on again.

I had the 4.4 software, I updated to the software you sent. Didn't change anything on reading the ink cartridge, but glad I have the newer software installed... as of now I'm running the cartridge even know it says its empty.. its heavier then my brand new 220 cartridge and way heavier then the empty 440's I have.... I guess I'll keep a eye on it! I love the printer otherwise....thanks for the info

Load a 1m roll of paper and print REPORT. Once it is printed there should be information relating to IC CHIPS or take a photograph of the report and share it in your message.

This is how your report of IC CHIPS has to look like:
https://ibb.co/bdWKbbK

if you have information similar to mine it means that all works well. You should find the problem in VersaWorks. I think that the problem relates more to the software side rather than printer itself.
Try going to MENU -> INK REMAINING
https://ibb.co/3FqHFtL

I personally use ANYCISS so I never know how much ink is left in cartridges I just change 2 liters pouches.

I will do that this afternoon.. thanks again for the info.... Do you know if its possible to eliminate the Light cyan/light magenta for printing? I dont see a need for them for my printing needs... that's 4 ink cartridges I would save on cost. My last machine was just CMYK and I was happy with the results! I'm not going to be printing pictures so I just dont feel the need.

You need to download service manual switching the printer to CMYKMC mode.

SERVICE MANUAL

BTW: If you're going to enter to service mode you need to press a particular sequence of buttons.
There are videos on YouTube that shows how to enter to service mode for example:
Although it doesn't mean that XC-540 has the same sequence. You need to try.... and be careful! First read then think twice and only then do.

Thanks for the info, I've had it in service mode before to do a head alignment so I'm familiar with the sequence. I just didn't know if it was possible to eliminate the Light Cyan and Light Magenta... I bought the machine used so it had been set up already with CMYKlmlc...wouldn't hurt to keep it that way either I guess...
