Roland GX-24 trouble

My GX-24 starts cutting just like it suppossed to (set up for edge cutting) but, as soon as it gets back to the lower area, it stops cutting and the screen shows something like miss fed material or something. The paper looks like it's in place correctly. I put a piece of tape over the front sensor and it works but, only allows me to roll the vinyl out but, not in.
Can anyone help me out? The troubleshooting guide tells me nothing. Is this something that I could fix myself?
