so i've been having this intermittent issue and have determined that it's not a software or computer issue... I can send the same file through and it will either happen or it wont... about 50/50... the only time i know it wont happen is if i shut off the printer, disconnect the power cord and restart the printer... it will then work fine at least for the first print... after that its 50/50

and it's not the media off-tracking... it ran through straight, it's the printing that is tracking...

I shut it off and restarted it, send the same file and now it's fine

any help please, even if it's "call a technition"... if at all possible i'd like to be able to fix it myself if i can

ps... it also has the issue with cutting... even if the print is right, the cut might be off by 1/2''... but only side to side always to the left

Encoder strip is my guess, clean it or take it out and flip it over. Mine was doing the same till I flipped the encoder strip.

The encoder strip is a clear plastic tape that runs across the back of the print head has very small markings printed on it to tell the print head where it is located as it moves left and right.

Be very CAREFUL if you clean it, you don't want to scratch it or erase the markings.

You say you want to repair the printer yourself, and you don't know what the Encoder Strip is, so I suggest you at least download the service manual so you know what things are and how to fix them:

http://www.4shared.com/office/GIQBzh...00_sp_300.html

Or maybe you can pay for the premium membership and download the service manual from here if they have it ( I'm NOT sure about this).

Good luck!

thanks for all the info, i cleaned it and it didn't fix it... actually made it occur more consistently... flipped it over and... 100 times worst...

so i placed an order for a new one through your website robert... thanks! couldn't find the manual but i placed the order anyways cause i have orders waiting

i ended up taking the strip back out and carefully pulling it through a papertowel with alcohol on it and let it dry well... figured since it wasn't working and i've got another on the way whats it going to hurt right... got what seemed to be a substantial amount of "dirt" off it... i dont think the PO ever cleaned it... or its just really dusty in my office...

anyway that seemed to clear up the issue at least for now... i wiped down all the hard surfaces inside the printer as well cause it was a bit of a dirty mess...

ill see how long this lasts and report back

Encoder strip needs cleaning (or flip it if it hasn't been flipped yet after cleaning it really good with alcohol), possibly dirty reader eye on the carriage that reads the strip.....and/or is your printer on a good surge protector? Could be static built up that's being released when you unplug it for a short time then plug it back in.
