Roland SP-540V Nozzle Check

Capital Signs

New Member
I have a guy here checking out my printer, so he can buy it... I need to know if anyone knows how to do a nozzle test to make sure all of the heads are firing correctly. Anyone can guide me there?

Thanks!

hold down test print....look at the results...if there are spots missing that will tell you if all the nozzles are firing

thats it pretty simple. if you get missing or "off" lines you need to swab the printheads(on the sides, not the bottom) and replace or clean the wipers and check the wiper scaper for excess ink build-up. then run a cleaning cycle, test print again. you may have to run more than one cleaning or do a medium or power cleaning.

The black is the one that is giving me the problem, it seems that they are either miss firing or missing. hmmm, any more suggestions?

Pinch off the drain lines that go from the pump to overflow bottle or capping station to pump. Fill the capping stations with cleaning fluid and park the heads down and let soak. You can try this without pinching the lines but then you aren't getting a real effective soak - it would work if the nozzles are barely plugged with dry ink though.

You can also swab the print head directly IF you are VERY GENTLE before the head soak - this should work. BUT BE GENTLE!

First, I find it amazing that what should be a daily procedure (nozzle check test print) is so often not performed. I have to assume that the installing dealer simply did not train you on how to run this test, nor at what frequency.

If you have a solvent printer from anyany manufacturer, the nozzle test print should be run daily. This allows you to spot problems with nozzle performance before they become major issues. These problems tend to be:

1) Nozzle Outs - Nozzles that are not firing, ie clogged nozzles.
2) Nozzle Deflections - The nozzle is spraying ink, but not in the proper place on the media. This is most often an issue with the color Black (K), as it is the most dense color, and more often tends to leave residue in the nozzle orifice that causes the deflection.

Now that you are experiencing both nozzle outs and deflections, you are into a remedial mode. I would:

a) Replace your wipers. These are the only things that are supposed to come into contact with the nozzle plate. Wipers should be replaced regularly (quarterly or so).
b) Immerse the offending head(s) in cleaning solution. Follow the procedure that High Impact described above for this, for 30 minutes.
c) Run a cleaning from the control panel. Then run the test print again.

It is really pretty common to have nozzle performance issues on the black, on Roland machines. The best thing is to keep your wipers fresh, perform weekly physical cleanings, and use your machine regularly, to keep the ink moving within the ink train. Good luck.

GOOD ROLAND TRICK....

1) open the front guard.

2) jam something in the guard switch so it thinks it is closed

3) run a medium clean on the head that isn't firing correctly

4) while the head is being cleaned, grab ahold of the whole print head carriage and wiggle back and forth gently.

5) run another test print .

This works like a charm.... Don't forget to keep those capping stations clean.

IMO - You don't really NEED to get into service mode, go into manual clean by holding down the power and clean button at the same time until the printer powers up - follow prompts to move head carriage. If the head soak doesn't work then there may be no quick fix...I'm pretty sure it should work especially if it is just dirty/plugged nozzles.

Just ignore me if I am misunderstanding something! ;-)

I will email you that file here shortly High Impact. I need to go into service mode to show how many times the heads have fired and how long the machine has been on.

Service Mode Protected

When I push the left, right, and down arrows then the power button, it says it's protected "service mode protected" WTF. I need to get in to see how many fires i have on the head. I have this printer sold, but I want to make sure that I can give this to the buyer! Thanks a bunch!

Ok, I have done a couple of those things, and still having just a bit of problem with the black. Do you think If I put cleaning solution through the black it would help???

What you may want to try is to hook a syringe up to the black going to the head and try sucking and see if that free it. Or place some cleaning solution on the capping station on a lint free towel a couple of time and try the cleaning cycle after that.

You said you had a tech coming over to do this for you. Why don't you simply let the tech do it before you break something. The more you post all of these problems the more the value is going down on that machine..... anyway from people on these sites.
