Roland sp300v making noises when printing crop marks

Hey there.. I have a couple of Roland printers - sp300 and vp300's.

We have one that was making a slight grinding type noise when it was printing crop marks - and only then.. yesterday it began to make noise during the entire print run..

I found a great deal of the Black metal dust around the back of the inside of the machine - up where the encoder strip moves back and forth.. and we cleaned it a few months ago when we replaced the scan motor.. we have never had that level of dust before and to me is indicative of the grinding we are hearing.. does anyone have any thoughts as to what might be out of place or need replacing.. the print itself is fine.. no problems at all.. it is just a concern that it could be a bigger mechanical problem

technically.. maybe not..

the encoder strip sits between two pieces of plastic.. the plastic it sits inbetween does move... as the print head moves back and forth, but the encoder strip itself is tacked down..

Wrong. The cut carriage cable is sandwiched between the two plastic guides. The Encoder Scale is stationary and sits vertically along the length of the printer.

Grinding noise could be several things on the SP.... Carriage Wire Pulley, Cut Carriage Cable & Guides making noise, Linear bearing.

Head could be slightly hitting your media clamps.
Take them off and see if the noise is still there when printing.
