Routed letter installation advice wanted

I need to mount some routed letters so that they look like they are "floating" in front of a ruffled curtain. I usually use studs to mount my routed letters, but I'm not sure they won't sag as the letters will be about 2" to 3" from the wall. On some of the letters, I will only by able to use #8 studs.

Any ideas?
