Seizing Rail Bearings

So my roland 745 is getting old. The carriage unit is hard to get rolling.
Roland says the bearings never fail, but my carriage is not rolling like it should.

I disconnected the cable and re-wound it, cleaned the rail, bearings, yada, yada, yada. Still not rolling well.

It looks like I have to get new bearings from Japan. As Roland doesn't carry them in CA.

Anyone else have issues with bearings?

Yes all the time, I just replaced a pair on a 745 and a FJ-540. Both 5 year plus printers. We are out of stock, you might try Robert M for the parts. You will have to disassemble your head carriage. It is about a 3 hour job with the right tools and hight adjustment templet

Good luck

that's good to hear. I was talking with my reps here and they looked at my like I'm an alien.

I cleaned it a ton and it looks like she's okay for now. Tell me about the template I need if you don't mind.

I've rebuilt this machine from the cart needles up, as well as rebuilding head boards, etc. I have enough technical experience to handle the job.

I'd like to know what I'm getting into before I start. :)

I had the pleasure of re-spooling the drive cable yesterday. BLAH.

Drive cables are a bitch. Try taping the spool to keep it from unravelling on you. You are going to have to un bolt the print carriage unit from the bearing assembly. Your print heads will be exposed and will need to be supported. The bearings will then slide all the way to the left were they can be removed after removing a safety screw. Watch carefully the position the bearing come off the rail. Replace, lubricate w/gun oil and rebuild.
