Separate cutting carriage from print-head carriage

I operate a vs-540i and I have a 0109 error, I know all I should have to do is move the carriage down and move the wipers until I hear the telltale click, but my wipers are in such a position that the print-head carriage can't go past the wipers. Isn't there a way to separate the cutting carriage from the print-head carriage? For some reason I want to say there's just a magnet holding them together that needs to be released but I can't remember how to do so. Any suggestions?
