Shading/Gradient w/ Cut Vinyl

Is there a way to take a graphic w/ some simple shading and make it so the half-tone dots would cut to show the shading? I'm working in illustrator and would cut either from versaworks or flexi.

i don't know how it works in flexi or versaworks, but if you can translate it over from illustrator... here's an easy guide:
