Sign-Makers Unions: Good or Bad?

I just recently discovered that, here in Alaska, there's a local for the International Union for Painters and Allied Trades. While I'm in a position that wouldn't currently allow for much benefit from a union, I haven't been here forever, and have spent the majority of my time in this industry "paying my dues" so to speak. Does anyone here have experience with unions in relation to this industry? I feel like, as anti-union as I tend to be, that this is an industry that could really utilize the collectivism of such a thing. I'm curious to see what my peers (both owners and employees) think.

Came up here a while back. Interestingly enough the most adamant defender of unions here isn't a member of the one that's available to him.
