beacon always has a nice booth set up, i buy my ink and bought my machine from them. They are great people.

I'm glad i didn't go since it was another small show this year it seems. I don't know why the turnouts are so bad anymore

Good post Gary(Circleville). It was nice meeting you and we missed you at the get together on Saturday.

You know this was my first year at Sign World. So I didn't have anything to compare it to as far as size goes. other than letterhead meets and walldog events. Also we are pretty specialized so many of the booths there didn't have much to offer me, but a few of them were worth the visit.

But really, for me, what the vendors have to offer pales in comparison to the wealth of knowledge you can learn in such a short time just talking to other sign makers.

I want to give a special thanks to Gary (GB2) and his son Brett for showing us around the city and all the great conversations and especially for the ride to the airport. We have to get you guys to a Walldog meet or over to Pontiac one of these days.

And of course Dan, you are an inspiration to us all. Your encouragement and good advice has definitely got me excited about the future of our business. You will be happy to know on my flight back I began sketching up plans for our "entry" into your design challenge. I enjoyed gambling away all $5 of my hard earned money along side you.

It was also great meeting the rest of the signs 101 gang. I encourage all of us on this forum to get out there and get to know one-another in person. The avatars, aliases and words on a computer screen don't do these people justice. It is so cool putting a face to a name.

oh and Mary Ann, depending on how next year looks for us, I may have to take you up on your offer to see Philly. It sounds like a good time.

What a weekend! OK, so this was one of the smallest shows in years but did that make it a poor show? Actually, things are only what you make of them and on the show floor, I was able to be more focused with particular vendors and therefore got a lot of valuable information and potentially good deals this time. If you come to this show and don't attend the seminars, you are missing the major portion of the benefit, especially this year with our own Dan and Joe, both providing excellent seminars.

It was my great pleasure and honor to get to spend time with Dan and Joe this year. What a motley crew we were as we went casino hopping to get as many pictures and ideas as possible, with security people hot on our heals at each one, trying to get their hands on Dan's camera! Let me tell you that Joe Diaz is simply one of the nicest guys you ever want to meet and Dan Sawatzky is really a nuclear reactor disguised as a human body!

As Joe said, one of the greatest things is meeting and interacting with others and this year was actually one of the better showings of Signs101 members. I had the good fortune to meet Kevin (HeathSignCompany), Mary Ann (Bannerday), Joe (Joe Diaz), Dan (Grampa Dan), Casey (Signburst), Mike (Mike Koval), Colt (Slightly Chilled) and Gino (Gino). Some others that I know were there but I missed were Gary (Circleville) and Rick (Typestries). Gary (Circleville), I can't believe I didn't catch you, I was one of the ones reading in Joe's seminar!

Well, there's one more task I need to do to conclude the show experience and here it is.....Momma Jane Diaz, this one's for you!

Gary, I'll have to slightly disagree with you on the "It's only as good as you make it" show. I would loved for it to be a great show for us. I loved that show from the first time I went. It was the first time I got to be face to face with so many of our suppliers out of state. Plus, we found new suppliers too. I loved that show.

However, we don't print, we don't have wide format printers, and we don't do channel letters or LED work.

So strip that out, and what was left for us to "make into a good show"? We do interior signs, that's our business. In the past, we've had many substrate suppliers, modular sign suppliers, touch screen directory suppliers, lobby directory suppliers, all there. This year. Nope. Maybe 1 or 2 little guys wanting to be big guys with inferior products compared to their competition. I picked up a couple of samples of a modular sign system I'd not heard of. Tried to get the lens off using the provided suction cup. Couldn't get it. Not something I could sell my clients.

So as much as I would have loved to have an amazing show, I just didn't see it there. Now, if I was into LED's or digital printing, I probably could have kept myself busier and even got some good deals.

No Oracal, 3M, nothing. Vista used to co-sponsor some of the event every year. No show this year. When your previous years sponsors aren't even coming, it's not a good sign.

We are in the process of buying a piece of equipment. We looked at it a month ago and figured we'd look at it at this show to make our mind up. The sales rep called me early in the week and I said "See you at the show on Thursday" and he said "Oh, we're not going to that show this year. It had very poor numbers for us last year, so we have decided to spend our marketing efforts at other shows".

I always enjoy getting swatch kits and various bits and pieces and finding substrates and substrate suppliers, but I just didn't see much of that there.

No doubt the value in the show this year was in the seminars, which I did not attend. However, it would have been nice to have great seminars backed up by a killer show.

Honestly, I don't get it. I don't get why vendors won't come to it. I've heard it's too expensive, but how expensive is it to have your competitor take sales from you on all those new latex printers? With the prices they had on those printers, I'm sure they sold a bunch of them. I know who didn't sell any at the show, because they weren't there. In todays market, where keeping your existing customers seems a priority, I can't imagine NOT being at a show like that, and allowing your competition to take your customers away from you. Let's be honest, those shows don't "cost" the big boys a penny. They sell enough equipment to pay for the trips, I'm sure. So even if it's a break even situation for them, they retain customers and ensure future supply sales for that equipment. To me, that's worth it, but I don't run the companies, so it doesn't matter.

I do know if I wanted to buy a printer, my normal company for that stuff, that wasn't at the show, probably lost my sale because I was impressed with the sales staff at one company.

I guess we'll have to move our trip from the Atlantic City show to Vegas or some place south. Is the big one in Orlando this year? Or is this year in New Orleans?
