I've seen it on other forums, whereby if someone give helpful and not hateful answers their "rep" goes up by people clicking Up or down on their posts...

this could be a better way to calculate whether someone is giving you good advice or not better than sheer number of posts.

Here's a link explaining it...also might make the forum more fun

What do you think Fred?
What do you think members?

That's used in some of the other forums as well. Only bad side to it, is that there is a good chance of abuse as well. Someone having it in for someone else giving them negative reps or a bunch of other people "ganging up" on someone. I've seen it happen.

In theory, I think it's good, but in real world application I'm not too sure.

We used to have the chiclet system - it was during one of my life crisis that kept me offline, so I don't remember why Fred got rid of it. IMHO they usually turn into a big ole' popularity contest or a battle of the chiclets between members.

How would it work when you get such radically different advice on here? Someone can say "Is XYZ brand material any good?" to which you'll get some people saying "It's all I ever use, it's amazing" and other's saying "It's the worst junk I've ever used".

Who gets the karma points for good advice in those posts?

NOOOOOOO! No more chicklets!

In case you haven't noticed we tend to jump on bandwagons a lot around here.....the karma points would be so skewed by popularity that they'd be meaningless.

I suppose karma is given by the person who is helped? If they buy that material and it is crap then its a thumbs down if its great thumbs up.

I never claimed to be an expert just thinking of ways to make the forum a little more fun and interactive since we spend so much of our work days on it :thumb:

problem with that is it is all about your own talents and own likes or dislikes. if someone helped someone by telling them to use One Shot and a foam roller for a nice finish for a sign background and the person had no real talent for painting, well, you can see what might happen. same thing with materials. there are some who love a material while others just plain hate it for their own reasons.

bring back the chicklets!

Hey, the ones that clash and confront others, more helpful than a yes man. They bring ideas to contrast our own. I do know, the bullies do get on private messages and send sound advice and help, but when they find someone they like, no way the newbie ever be alone. We all seem to help whom we like only, and the Bullies seem to make us explain our motives, seek us out, that is their way, and I have mine. You have yours.Thing is, those buggers that attacked me before, they had a right to lol, maybe they jumped to conclusions, but I never said the full story at first in my posts. the detractors are proved correct when abused, when replied to fully they just be quiet, answer on PM, not cause they beaten, just cause they only want open talk. To not retaliate is not weak. To Rate someone on people who like them is wrong, for getting higher ratings on NICE comments is wrong. All I know is the people that are on this forum, dont go for the kill, dont keep on at it, we have been all ripped off, and used, but I do not know a true bully here, no way is there a need for ratings, or to gain credibility

A similar system to what you describe is built into our software. It provides a "Reputation" button for adding or subtracting reputation points and then displays the reputation of each member in their posts in the form of rectangles ... hence the name "Chiclets" like the brand of gum. Each member's ability to add or subtract reputation points is governed by how many reputation points they have received from others.

We turned it on a couple of years back. Within a day or two it had been so severely abused that many members were upset and ready to leave. In addition, the displayed results were useless for the intended purpose. We turned it off and have no interest in ever turning it back on.

My feeling is that we manage to go through life without wearing reputation signs around our necks and manage to develop our trusts and distrust opinions of others just fine. Generally speaking, if someone posts something that is inaccurate, other posts will point that out.

How do I add karma to that post? ;)

I've been on a forum were you could give "thanks" to people for good posts. This made it so you could be positive but not negative.
