WTF?! $3000 dollars for the design concept for a project in the hundreds of millions?
Wow, and I thought the graphic design/logo business had gone to crap because of crowd sourcing.
And they have "prestigious" jurors who are on board with this?

Go Bills!
one only has to remember one simple little fact.

you don't have to enter, or for that matter ever go to this place for the rest of your life.

I think the goal is to see the broad spectrum of ideas and then take it to the professionals and get it done properly.

It's a great idea, you definitely will get more ideas than if you just hired some architect firm to come up with some something. Gives a chance to someone who may not even be in the field a crack at doing something they might have wanted to try their whole life...

I see nothing wrong with crowd-anything-ing

The absolute simple fact...

The only one that benefits is the person/company running
the contest.

3g's is chump change and the majority of entrants
will get what they deserve...

Reading all that, you would think they would supply plans,
a development plan to help someone get started. Don't
see how anyone would/could do this well without that and
walking the place.

By the tone of your post I surmise you are going to enter.

There is a major problem with crowd sourcing though. It devalues talent. When you can no longer get paid for your designs how will you feel?

I just realized, since were never gonna get a football
team they can have our ideas.... and you can bet
someone got paid for this, and it ain't even gonna happen...

Gimme my 3 g's!

The Silverdome only cost a half million

No judgement on the crowd sourcing here. But a bit of background:

The Silverdome was purchased a few years ago for a $500,000 !

Last year, the company that owns the dome (not sure if it is the same that bought it for $500,000) sold the "stuff" that was left on site - memorabilia, copper wiring, anything that wasn't nailed down - for $500,000.

Yes, three grand isn't much for a multi-multi million dollar design. But the bucks flowing through this operation may (or may not, I don't know) not be all that grand.

I just saw the jurors...

http://1200featherstone.com/jurors/

2 have wikipedia entries, all are architects of some experience.
Why don't they get off their arse and do it... betting they are getting
paid more than the winner... by the way, from now on, I want to be known
as Ricardo Ponce de Leon....

GREAT, just what I always wanted a bunch of overly-educated architects grading my art work. Ironic since they cannot design logos and have a hard time grasping how to letter a sign in the from of a building. I will pass

I don't always agree with design competitions, but in this case, I think it's a great way to get the community involved. Too bad the judges aren't a better representation of the community.

Imagine the press for the winner.

I'm excited to see what they do with it. I've spent many days in that building. It's not the nicest stadium, but it's a part of Detroit.

Sounds good to me.

It's about as good as getting first or second place in a software contest and then pedaling your wares as a software finalist. Even the runner~ups get a nice mentioning in magazines. Think of all the other big contests the winner will be invited to. Here we go again..... those people who need a title.

:design:I'm the National winner of the 'Such & Such Sports Complex' for 2015. Please, use me for your next project and I'll basically work for free for you, too. It's not about the money, but all about having a nice title hanging on my door. The more titles and credentials I have, the better I feel about myself. Next week, I'm gonna do a seminar on how I generate these logos. You too, can work for nothing. I'll show you how............. :peace!:

They aren't looking for architectural renderings here, people. They are looking for ideas. It's a giant brainstorming session, that's all it is, calm down. They are offering prize money to build excitement, which leads to more participation, which leads to more ideas, and more interest in the project, and ultimately a feeling of "ownership" in the final project for the participants which will help it be successful if it ever happens.

I think the comparing architecture firms and sign shops is a bit of a stretch. There are important differences to consider.

Architecture firms typically "front" design work and have been long before crowd-sourcing became a thing. Often firms respond to an RFP (request for proposal). The firm will create a design concept and submit it to the potential client, who will be receiving multiple proposals from multiple firms. The client then chooses which proposal they will go with. This is all done before and significant amount of money changes hands. Where architects make their money is providing the construction documents and project management services.

The chosen proposal will then move on the next design phase where the specifics are hammered out. Often the firm receives a retainer and design work is billed hourly. The retainer for a small project (one million dollar) can quickly get into the 20,000 to 30,000 range. This is used to produce documentation to get the stakeholders on board. Finally once the design and budget is approved by the stakeholders construction documents specifying the project are produced to the tune of 40,000 to 50,000. Once the job begins project management fees could be another 50,000.

That is why they give away "free" work. A small firm may only need a dozen projects a year to be successful. One large project can provide 500,000 of income over two years. The 40-80 man hours to contribute a concept is the cost of doing business.

As for why the architects don't get off their *** and do it, they could but they are not going to spend the time and resources pursuing this project, they are going after others.

Architects, like all designers, like awards to hang on their wall. The awards do far more than fuel an ego. They provide leverage in the RFP process and are a promise of the quality of work they can do for a client if they accept the design. Work which will be billed out at a minimum of $150 an hour and up to $500+ an hour depending on the reputation of the architect.

Update

They still haven't announced anything yet, but this was going on while the crowd sourcing project was under way.
