Anybody out there hearing the "church" speel ? What I mean is since the sign(s) are for a "church", they should receive a discount since it is a "church" ?

oh all of the time we do ... we still haven't come up with a good explanation to them other than we don't accept donations so we have to make money

Same as any other for profit business. I don't discriminate and charge them just as I do any other business. Strangely, I've never had a church question my price and ask for a discount.

The catch with me is that this job is for a friend of the family which I would already give a discount but a double discount ? A double discount isn't part of MY plan but I don't want to be an ASS either. So its why I'm asking.

I used to get that all the time only they wanted the cost of my labor & materials donated... A wise old man turned me on to a form letter whereas I inflated my price 100 percent and made them sign accepting it as a charitable contribution... Reallys helps each quarter when paying taxes...

Yup heard that one.. or for the Good Samaritian (getting signs for fundraisers) they try to make you feel bad for them that they are trying to raise this money. I just tell them it is what it is, I don't price anything different!

I tell them, "sure I'll give you a discount" and charge them the same price. I just inflate my price by 25% and then give them a 25% discount. Nobody's caught on yet and it seems to make them happier.

I get that question quite a bit, I automatically raise the price by 50% then offer a 10% discount.
If they start to bother me, I usually explain that since they don't have to pay taxes, I feel I've already helped them out by paying higher taxes for my business.

I got a terrible church here to deal with here. Last year they wanted some signs done so I cut the matrerial and got it all ready. They just had to decide on the phone number and it was a done deal. I had layed out everything but the number. They called me and told me to cancell the order they had a member approach another sign shop and get it done elseware. I was out $200 in materials just like that, I was mad. They didn't even care that I had everything prepped.

This year they came back, that was a shock, wanted a sandwichboard sign. I told them $100 usually, it would $170 from anyone else. Crezone fancy hinge and feet. Nicely made up, they said I was a crook and surely I could make one for less than $60 since it was a church and all and plywood and paint, isn't that expensive. They run a used clothing store out of their basement and rake in the dough. Right now they are taking it to their board for a vote, hope I don't have to deal with them again. Thats one job I'd like to let go of.

They hang out out to dry with $200 in materials ... then when they come back, and instead of kicking them out the door ... you offer them a discount?

You are an idiot!

Ya I guess I am. Dealt with the Reverend on the $200 one. Was baptised in that church, kind of lost any faith I had left, ya know. But I'll definatly be offering them the discount of a additional surcharge next time. They caught me at a bad moment, that day.

I used to do lots of work with churches.

They payu the bus drivers.
They pay for the use of the bowling alley for the kids group.
They pay for the use of the pools.
They pay the pastor.
They pay full price to the plumber.

Why the hell should they get a discount for the sign man.

What would Jesus do?

I am sure he would insist that a man make an acceptable wage for work performed... Go to church, the first thing they ask for is money... Nothing wrong with giving what you can afford but don't show up Monday morning and ask me to give again, I have a business and have to make a living in order to put money in the plate each Sunday morning...

Maybe not complaining because your giving them a 6.25% discount from your original price by using the +25% then -25% system.

So it's your friend's church not even your own?
Why would you feel compelled to give a discount?
The only church I give a slight discount to is the one I attend.
(usually on Christmas and Easter)
Most times churches are the biggest hassle as a client because everything is run through a committee. And each member has an opinion.
And opinions are like @ssholes, everyone has one and they all stink.
hahaha
Old saying of my late father in law's and he was tighter than a crab's @ss and that's watertight. And so are most churches when it comes to a sign.
Not all.
Did they specifically ask for a church discount?
Love....Jill
