So I'm hiring someone to redo my logo....

So I found a designer that I'm hiring to redo my logo....well not just my logo, the entire damn brand identity. I'm getting the logo redone, finally getting a website, redesigning the storefront, the road sign, the interior customer area and anything else that needs it. Now I just have to figure out how to actually let go and let the designer do the job I want to pay him to do.

I just felt the need to admit that.

Must be great to be that busy. I'm sure you atleast have some ideas to share w/ the designer or are you gonna let them have at it ?

The logo I designed in 1995 has served us well over the years and I'm still happy with it. I've toyed with 10-15 other versions since I bought the shop four years ago but never really hit on anything I was completely happy with. In July I paid off the loan I took out to buy the shop...the plan was to use the rest of the year to come up with a new identity, a new direction, and a new business plan.

A guy I trained to work here many, many years ago left to go work for an internet based "logos by the pound" shop. He outgrew that and ended up in their corporate branding shop, something I look at as a small verion of Dan Antonelli's place. In the time he's been gone from here his talent level has increased dramatically and I love the style he's working in these days. He knows enough about me and about this place that I think we can work together on this project very well. Plus, it never hurts to have a fresher set of eyes look at you from the outside. They're much more likely to see what your customer base sees than you are.

I'm comfortable enough in my manhood to let them do what they do, I'm also loving the fact that we're doing this almost like a partnership deal. They're going to design to showcase the kind of work they want to do, I get to decide how to produce the finished product to showcase the kind of work I want to do.

'Delegating' is one of the hardest hurdles to overcome.

I've done it on a low level of things, but what you're doing...... I praise the living snot out of you.:notworthy:

Snot is a high level in my book. :U Rock:

Very smart Pat. Putting your business needs ahead of ego. Most business owners aren't that smart. Can't wait to see what they come up with for you!

...and yes, I am well aware that this doesn't actually fall in line with my traditional bashing of people who say "It's always hardest to design for yourself." I still say that's a crock. I'm just at a point where I've decided to turn the business loose and see where it can go. I'm perfectly content hiring specialists to focus on details so I get back to working on the big picture.

Congratulations on a tremendous step in your company's evolution (and for paying off that loan!).

I expect to see some big things come out of this next year!

Best of luck,

GP

If you have enough confidence in the designer you chose it shouldn't be a problem. I hope it works out well for you. Post updates, will be interesting to see the process.

Thanks,
Kurt
