SP-540 Troubles

This is going to sound like I'm completely stupid but I am very lost at this point. I just bought a SP540 used from a private seller and I'm setting it up in my shop. I have an older computer I can hook it up to but I also have my everyday laptop that I would like to use as a rip. I know right now I need a new crossover cable, and no I am not connected to any networks, but is it a foolish descision to hook it up to my laptop? Thank you so much!

I use my laptop to connect to mine. My printer is connected to my router and my laptop is connected wirelessly.
