SP - 540V Pinch/grit rollers adjustment?

I'm having an issue while cutting on my 540 with alignment.

When media is being cut in the printer and the pinch rollers pull the media back and forth it seems its slipping, middles of "e" or "b" will be misaligned.

I know whats happening, IF the media in the back of the machine is "tot" as in no slack and the printer pulls against the heavy roll it will slip in the printer and misalign. this causes me, when loading media, to unroll about 6 feet behind the printer. This allows for the media to pass back and forth through the printer without it having to pull on the roll.

I guess my question is, is there a way to adjust the pinch or grit rollers to have a better grip on the media?

I hope i made sense.

cheers

Pinch Pressure Adjustment

The short answer to your question is Yes. The pinch wheel pressure can be adjusted. This is not a common adjustment, and can cause lot of feed motor errors if not done correctly.

However, before I went there I would ask a few questions...

I assume that you are asking about cutting plotter film in your printer, because a print/cut would already be slack after the print.

  1. What speed do you cut at? A little slower is better. Also match the up/speed and cutting speed for a little better accuracy.
  2. What type of media are you using? What paper release liner? Width?
  3. How many pinchwheels do you use when cutting?
  4. How old is the printer? What is the condition of the pinchwheels themselves. Perhaps they need to cleaned or even replaced.
  5. What is the condition of the grit-rollers. I often see grit-rollers in the field covered with ink. Use a stiff nylon brush to clean them.
Just a few thoughts...

I know on my SP-540V if I don't have some slack it will pull vinyl through but it sounds very harsh and makes me sick to think of the unnecessary wear it's causing.

Have you tried the prefeed option? If not go into the menu, mouse down until you find Prefeed, click into it and you'll see you can enable or disable it. This allows the printer to feed out the necessary amount of material plust a couple extra feet then feed everything back in and begin cutting at the beginning (or wherever it feels necessary to begin).
