strange color codes

A customer sends me color information for her logo...funny she never sent the actual logo lol. In any case one of the numbers is c3a204..... I ran it through google and it gave me an rgb equivialnt.
What I was wondering is why would someone be given this code as opposed to cmyk/pantone or RGB. I have never seen this before...where does it come from and where are they used?

I know you can type it into the photoshop color thing and it will convert it for you

it's called hexidecimal, and I used to build enough webpages that I could mentally mix colors with it, lol.
