Streaks (smugging) on Banners

I have a Mutoh VJ 1204 Printer. I've had it for about a 1 1/2 months. Everything is working out great except for one thing. When I print banners there are streaks (looks like ink has smugged). I've changed the settings to a banner. Everything works great with other materials. Any suggestions?

Try leaving in the material you're printing on, and rip it with a profile for something else, such as a p.s. vinyl. Does it leave the same streaks? If not your banner profile may be dropping too much ink. If it looks the same you may need to up your heat (or need to anyway).

Raise head height and lower temperatures.
Sounds like head strikes.

don't own a mutoh but that looks like head strikes to me

+1 raise head height and lower pre and print temps - also, make sure it isnt tugging off of the heavy roll

with our roland i always unwind the banner at the back so its not tugging on the banner any, as banner tends to be heavy.

OH okay, that's a headstrike. Not a different potential issue I was thinking it may be. Take Randya's advice on all things Mutoh.

dont worry about the heat
get a profile for that material or something similar and raise the head

adjusting heat settings is the last resort

also be careful with the hairs or threads on some banner material, if you get it cut burn of the threads with a torch or some alcohol and a lighter. those things will stick to your wet head like white on rice causing all sorts of issues

on scrim banner I have to set my temps to 20/30/50 (pre/print/post)

Heater options are in the "Printer Options" menu in Flexi.

I normally run 35 prehead, 38 platen, 50 dry.

The orange lever on the head carriage will set the head height.

with our roland i always unwind the banner at the back so its not tugging on the banner any, as banner tends to be heavy.

We used to get those same streaks. We could see ripples forming on the banner but couldn't figure out why. It took me forever (since I was too dumb to ask at signs101 ) to figure it out. It turned out that with a heavy roll, or a roll that had a lot of cling (like two sided banner material) we just need to keep some slack back there and we now have no problems with it.
