I agree completely with the reasons that you have stated for the former option. My only concern was if there was enough difference between the two product lines to warrant going with the more expensive switch for a longer term investment value and quality or not.

Since I feel pretty comfortable now with what needs to be done, I think my next step is to present this to them and see when we can proceed. Thank you again very much for all of your help!

As a side note you can find good procurves lightly used all the time from businesses liquidating their assets. Good iron is cheap the last few years because of this.
