third party inks for sp540 versaworks?

I currently use sp300 with colorrip and refillable carts (no chip)
I have an opportunity to get my hands on a sp540 with versaworks at a good price
can anyone tell me if the refillable carts need chips(electronic type)
to work with versaworks? or can I just slot them in and go

Chips

Pretty sure you will need chips but those printers just need to see a chip. They don't look for dates or write back to them like some printers.
