Hi everyone I am buying a used VP Roland printer cutter for my company TheBlownUp.com I was wondering if the community had any tips and or advice to look for when buying this type of equipment used. I know that there are a lot of little things that can go wrong and mess up the whole process which is why I feel like asking the vast amount of experience this forum has to offer may help me best!

I would think maybe the condition of the printing heads would be important. A tech can diagnostically plug in to the firmware and tell you how much life is left in them.

At $1000 a pop replacement costs, that's valuable info.

Just my 2 cents.

These are the things I would ask... we are currently running a VP540...

1. To see a print with very small reverse white type on rich black (this will show you how well your colors are aligning on the actual print)
2. To see a head test print (the one done through maintenance-cleaning) that will show you if the heads are dropping out.
3. To see an alignment test .
4. To see a long (6 foot or so) contour cut on already printed graphic.
5. How many hours are on the machine?
6. Has it always run OEM Roland inks?

Most important information is the test print, it'll tell you if the heads are in good condition. VPs are very reliable machines (as long as any inexperienced tech/user did not put his hands under the covers) so except the heads there are few sensitive parts (the scan motor and linear encoder to name them). History report (taken from the service menu) can give you the motor scan usage (a scan motor fails usually after 2000-2500 hrs). Avoid machines that have been run with third party inks.
