Tracing channel letters

Hello forum.
Are there better ways of tracing channel letter cans? Has any one getting this done digitally? I can think about taking many photos next to a 12" x 12" (or another known size) square, fixing perspective in photoshop and vectorizing from there.

Pattern it in the field. I take the tyvek paper, tape it all around the sign and use the side of a crayon to trace it.

I hope you're not joking. Is that accurate enough? I figured I'd have to remove each individual letter face and get a tracing around the inside of the trimcap.
