Trouble opening and importing

I was given an .ai file to work with. I was able to open it and import it once. every other time I try X3 locks up and I get the "not responding" error message and then X3 shuts down? any ideas on why this is happening? Thanks for your help.

AI file compression when saving is a big culprit. sometimes lotsa gradient mesh that give corel the heebie jeebies.

The error message usually says "file compressed resave without compression" (not the exact wording). Have customer save the .ai in a lower version, and it should work.
