Unpaid Land Taxes?

Pretty crazy that you can't own property free and clear in USA, always renting from the government

Some of it stems from long ago and they didn't want land to lay fallow for too long. Why some places have seen a problem with squatters as well. It goes back to when the country was far more agriculture compared to what it is like now. Those old laws just haven't changed at all.
