US Tariffs, Sigh!

As Canadian (Quebec), I thought we were good neighbors. When north-eastern states have electrical issues after snow storm or tornado, we are always there to help. When there's fires in California, we send water bombers and firefighters to help. We supply electricity to New York and Vermont states, we supply natural gas and petrol from western provinces, building timber, aluminum, nickel, steel... Well, honestly, it will be bad for no reason. What have we done wrong to deserve that?

Do you honestly believe that the sending the illegals home is going to cause us to have an american base worker problem?

The ones hes gathering up now are the ones the other countries released out of prison and sent over here.
There are so many industries in the US that rely on using cheap labour, farming, construction and factory work come to mind. These are the jobs that illegal immigrants are taking because a blind eye has been turned for so long. However these are not jobs that Americans are going to be lining up to take, these are hard manual labour jobs, often outside in the heat. If the illegals are deported tomorrow would you be OK with the price of housing doubling next year, or a pint of strawberries selling for $20?

North Americans have become addicted to cheap labour and cheap prices, have been for quite some time.

Just your bright haired sign designer.
Now we're in a position where American consumers are dependent on cheap, imported products.
Yea and all that cheep chinizium is literally trash collecting in the landfills two years later. Clothing doesn't last as long, Home appliances last the two year mark, Engine components on cars start going out right after the manufacture's warranty. I've noticed that LEDs that specify a 5-7 or 10 year life start failing before the 5 year mark, and on wall packs and parking lot lights, it's almost cheaper and easier to find a full replacement fixture for the same cost, but likely will die in 3-5 years now... but clients want everything for as cheep as they can get it too. The artificial supply/demand cycle is whats really killing our economy. All because because Rich Papa Hedge Fund Investor needs infinite growth on his investments.

As far as tariffs: If your supplies and overhead cost more, then charge more. It's Capitalism 101.
Yup! Supermarkets, and home goods will also increase in costs. Expect employees to also want pay bumps in order to afford the inflation from tariffs. I read somewhere that a family of 4 making 110k a year with both parents working, the average monthly grocery bill is $500-$600, even trying to select the store bands. I expect a lot more people to see couponing and scratch and dent grocers to start getting bombarded with middle income folks who are struggling.

It's not "help" because it's not charity. Canada sold natural gas, timber and power and fire people.

When there is a natural disaster, states boast about sending their linemen to help with the effort. Power companies get paid to send linemen out to work in other areas. It's like you saying I helped by charging and getting paid to put up a sign in another area. Good for you!

Did we get paid for taking in all the flights you guys grounded during 911, or for people opening up their houses to house all the stranded us citizens who couldn't get back into America?

We also don't charge when we send tankers down to help fight the fires in California. I believe we have a contract where we send some planes down during your wildfire season to use... But we also send aid and personnel down and go above the contract whenever there is a fire to help out.

I don't know about east coast, but I know theyve sent nurses and help to my when covid hit too... Not sure if we charged for that or not.

We send troops to fight in wars that have nothing to do with us, just to support America... But I'm sure that's part of a treaty. But even so... You don't see Canada starting any wars and asking us for help / troops, so that's kind of 1 sided.

Trump's doing tarrifs to get a better deal on trade, that's it. Less than .05% of fentanyl in USA is from Canada... More illegal immigrants enter into Canada from us than into us from Canada.... More illegal guns and drugs as well.

As for a trade deficit being bad... If you take out all the oil and gas we sell USA, it's pretty much even... But aside from that, whens the last time you went into a supermarket pissed off because they sell you more than they buy from you?

There's nothing wrong trying to get the best deal you can in a trade agreement, it's calling allies national security threats as a way to do it that's pretty shitty.

Can you imagine if Canada elected a new prime minister, and the first thing he did was say he's putting a 25% tarrif on USA because USA is a threat instead of an ally? I'm sure you guys would feel pretty disappointed as well.

But it "worked"... He "won", he got Trudeau to agree to spend 1.5 billion dollars to beef up security.... The same 1.5.billion dollars that was earmarked for border upgrades months before he even took office :roflmao:

I think it's important to set aside the us vs them argument. Many of us are related to each other through family, friendships and of course or businesses and economic ties. That aside, at the end of the day any trade has to benefit everyone or it's not going to work.

For President Trump, to use tariffs and trade restrictions to force the hand of Canada, China and Mexico only makes sense. In order to satisfy the public he has to make good and this is a strategy that seems to be working.

Now that the tariffs between Mexico, Canada and the US have been paused for 30 days it will be interesting to see what other arm wringing will take place between now and the beginning of February.

Regarding China, will the additional 10% be deferred as well or will this go forward? Is this a well placed tariff?

I guess the young people will have to start filling the manual labor jobs just like they did years back!

When I was in high school 1988-1992, we all had jobs. Lots of us worked in fast food. I worked at Hardees from 15-19. It was the best job I ever had! My son graduated 2 years ago and he was nearly the only kid in his class that had a job! What happened???? Why is it none of these kids have summer or after school jobs anymore??? The landscaper they worked for was BEGGING for help but none of my kids friends had to work! Their parents just paid for everything. And I was probably more well-off than most of them...I don't get it!!!

Is it the same all over the country? As you can tell, it burns my a$$ :roflmao:

My understanding is the whole point of threatening tariffs is to get these other countries to provide better border control and stop letting all the immigrants and fentanyl into the US. As long as they agree and do their part there's no tariffs.

I think that's 100% fair and only benefits all of us.

You're literally so far removed from this issue being in Canada, that you are going on the news alone. Your argument has nothing to do with the illegal immigration that has taken place over the past 4 years. We have upwards of 30million illegals who have crossed just since biden came into office. They are the ones in the sanctuary cities that are draining our public resources. That's the people they are focusing on getting rid of first.

The migrant workers who come over here and send money back to families are not the ones they are trying to remove.

I'm not sure how this might fit in, but my wife and I went to a diner about 15 miles away from where we live, out in the country last night. We both got a sandwich and a soda. Our bill was $36 something plus the tip. They said everything we got was made fresh..... right there. I don't think the electric, soda, meats, rolls or just about anything else was brought in, but that seemed a tad too much for that amount of food and no tariffs showed up on the bill. Ya know, when I was in high school, a 6-pak of budweiser cost $1.60. What is it today ?? Why can I get a car battery at walmart for one price or auto zone for almost twice as much ??
making fresh meals involve inmigrants working on the fields..... if they do not do the job, who will?

Had odd jobs since I can't remember. Dirty, sweaty jobs too. Even if it was something like cutting the neighbours lawn to help out, laying a sidewalk, framing a wall, etc., you felt like you accomplished something and where part of a something bigger.

On that note I think all able bodies kids should spend summers bailing hay and working in agriculture or spending a summer planting trees. Maybe on a survey crew where you hold the stick and learn to combat mosquitoes by smoking cigars.

Parents need to stop with the free handouts and butt wiping of their kids. They get bubble wrapped and sent off to university where they fart around and get a degree which often is not really earned and provides little more than a lifetime of student debt. Right out of high school they could be making huge cash in any of the dozens of trades that are desperate for workers.

This may not solve the trade and illegal immigration/worker shortage issues but it wouldn't hurt.

tariffs in those countries? what about the countries that are not in the american continent?
inmigrants are everywhere..... fentanyl will go where is consumed...... just like the material for signage, you need a sign, the sign is made with material imported from other countries.
