US Tariffs, Sigh!

Looks like I spoke to soon. Usmca is being honored, but still tarrifs on non goods specified in usmca... Still dumb, but at least he's following the trade deal he himself negotiated.

This is wild though. Tarrifs on so many countries, and so many goods.... 10% on every single country at minimum, and then much larger ones on certain items and countries.

Almost nothing is entirely American made.... This effectively increases prices by 10% on everything.

I still don't get what the point is.... When he did it to Canada / Mexico, it sucked, and it felt like a betrayal.. but America is big, and in a trade war with 2 countries they could rough it out... There would be an increase on some stuff, but Canada would be hurt more than America would be... So it'd be a "win"

But to fight every country at once? I feel like it's going to have the opposite effect, people will move manufacturing out of USA because the rest of the world's marketshare is bigger.... So in the end businesses would lose more money bringing, or keeping production in USA and having to pay reciprocal tarrifs on every export.

Of course every company is different, and if it's not an international brand itd still make more sense to keep it in America.

Going to be an interesting time! Or an interesting few days if the wind blows and everything gets canceled, but I feel like if that happens again, he'd have too much egg on his face... So this time the tarrifs are here to stay.

If 3m vinyl costs us more, well increase our prices and the customer will pay... Not us, right?

So can we really blame 3m for raising their prices when it costs them more as well?

That's the thing.... A lot of people expect the companies to pay the tarrifs, which in return makes it cheaper to produce in America, and it's supposed to bring jobs back to America.... But no matter what the situation is, the companies have to pay more - and they won't be eating that cost.... If anyone on here thinks 3m,.or any company effected by tarrifs should eat the cost, it's a bit hippocritical.

Now if your ok with paying more because it means more jobs coming back to America.... That I get and understand. I've been trying to buy Canadian ever since these tarrifs happened, stuff probably costs 5-10% more on average, and I'm ok with that.

The more I unpack this the more I see possible collusion between Canada, Mexico and the US. From day one I felt all the "we are friends" and "close allies" nonsense all the talking heads were spewing was more of a distraction than a plea to take it easy on Canada and Mexico.

Ultimately is makes good sense to bring manufacturing of many products back to the US, Canada and other developed countries. The manufacturing base is aging and many of these countries will have difficulty providing for their own needs let alone the production of consumer or vital goods for export half way across the world.

As the manufacturing base returns to the US, both Mexico and Canada will be part of this and both should support and benefit from this growth.

I'm starting to see potential opportunities.

Thoughts?

I don't think so. It seems like car parts are still tarrifed... And anything not under usmca has a 10% tarrif on it.

I think he was "easy" on Canada and Mexico because he got into quite a bit of shit tarrifng a country he has a trade deal with, completely ignoring the trade deal.

He used fentanyl as a reason... Then his own government came out with a list of countries fentanyl is coming to USA from, and Canada wasn't even on the list. Then some senators started saying "but if we crack down on those countries... The drug dealers will start using Canada to smuggle it since they have nowhere else... So it's still a national emergency"

I think he still wants to tarrif Canada, because in his mind a trade deficit means America is being ripped off. But he's got so much backlash from automakers and states that rely on Canadian trade, he couldn't do it all at once.

If you look at every countries tarrifs....all he did was take how much USA sells to the country, divides it by how much the country sells to USA....divide it by half, the. Rounded it. Then that turns that percentage into how much every country gets a tarrif :roflmao:

I dunno. I feel like this is going to be the worst mistake America has ever made, or (highly unlikely) some sort of 5d chess and it'll be the best decision America has ever made. Seems like all the economists think it's the former.... I can't find one article / economist that says this can work out.

3M only made a little more than 10 billion in profits last year; surely, you don't expect them to make only 9.75 billion this year. Now that the EPA is being dismantled maybe someone will build a factory to refine petrochemicals. The Great Lakes are almost clean, time to pollute em up again.
There are several petrochemical plants in LaPorte, Tx.

I don't care what eggs cost. In all reality, if I have 2 eggs every day and 2 pieces of toast for breakfast it's cheaper and healthier than poisonous cereal which nobody should eating.

Eggs at $6/18 = .33 egg
Bread $3.18/20 = .16 slice - cheaper and healthier if you make your own!!!

.98 per day for breakfast? Even if you have 6 people in your family...$5.88 for one meal?

The only thing cheaper is oatmeal at .13 per half cup serving of Great Value. Add some blueberries to the oatmeal and you're still under $1.

It's also ridiculous, Japan consumes most of their rice rather than exporting it, and Arkansas grows more rice than Japan by a ridiculous margin, like several orders of magnitude more.

FTFY...

Years ago, in our area, Katy TX was all rice fields. Then as we started started going overseas for our food supplies, the farmers here sold their land and now it's neighborhoods.

I guess the Japanese like their rice so much they don't want anyone else to have it. LOL

i am not making my own chickens. BUT, I have plenty of friends who have chickens.

That homemade bread is better for you anyway.

Texas has LOTS. We produce oil and gas and plastic. Katy Tx his home of the energy corridor. It's also has the largest freeway in the world with a whopping 26 lanes. I hate driving I10 in katy because there seems to always be construction and too much traffic.
Texas has always been known for cotton, cattle and fresh produce.
The piney woods (east texas) has the paper mills.

We are first in cheese and second in milk and butter production. I'm pretty sure we are number one for the nation's cranberries, cherries and ginseng (weird). Land O'Lakes is a few blocks West of my shop and Sargento a few blocks East. Every countryside drive contains views of cows and corn and the smell of manure.

When I did payroll for Land O' Lakes I started with 367 farms. I quit 6-ish years later we were down to 160-ish from small farms selling all their head to the mega farms due to retirement and kids not wanting to take the farms over. The dairy industry has really evolved over the last 10-15 years. Very few small farms of under 100 head exist. Most are now 500+ with rotating or floating parlors. My ex in-laws still milk 70 head a day, they are 77 yrs old LOL

Huh.... I didn't know USA was such a big rice producer. The only USA rice Ive ever heard of is uncle Ben's minute rice :roflmao:

Which i grew up on and love... But it feels like the fast food of rice once you've had good rice.

Kukuho rose rice from Japan is some of the best rice Ive ever had... It's extremely expensive, but it's really good.

Does USA make non uncle Ben type rice? The big sacks you buy and use in rice cookers? Since USA produces 20 billion lbs a year, I'm guessing so... But never heard of it.

Going to USA this weekend to get some panda Express, 1 last time incase pricing gets too out of hand... I'll check out the rice isle and get some USA made rice!

See, tarrifs are already working for you guys, you just sold 1 bag of rice.

Not entirely sure that you can get your hands on anything labeled as Arkansas rice where you are, but here's a list of brands that utilize it. Funny enough, Anheuser-Busch is top of the list... so if you're enjoying a fine light beer, it's likely AR rice giving you the buzz.
