Using currency in a design layout or coupon.

I have a customer wanting to do up some coupons for his pizza shop. The sample he gave me was a Canadian $5 and $2 actual currency with his info over top to use as a coupon. I told him in Canada we can't use our currency in a Design.

First, is this true for us Canadians?

I thought in the USA you were able to do this as long as the size is a certain amount larger or smaller than original size.

Is this true?

My suggestion was to just design his own $5 and $2 currency for the coupon and use that.

Any quick thoughts on using Currency for layouts.

http://www.moneyfactory.gov/resources/lawsandregulations.html

Couple rules to follow for US Currency. Easy to read. Less than 3/4 size or more then 1.5x size. CANNOT be double sided. Only single sided. You must destroy it after your final use. It does say something about not using any part of the design for advertisement purposes. Which I believe would include you. Better look first $15,000 and jail time no Thanks. Not sure on Canadian law.

That's the kind of link I was looking for with regards to our Canadian Currency. Thanks.

Funny thing is that he had already had some printed by another printing company (not sure who) and thus wondered why I told him I could not do that..... or at least I was quite sure I couldn't. Just wanting to confirm. I still won't do it that way but wanted to get others input.

Still can't find a link about our $$ in Canada.

Just found this link http://www.bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Policy_Reproduction_Bank_Note_Images.pdf

and it seems similar with the size thing. At least I know now that what he had done with his last printing place was not done with those regulations in mind.

I am going to just design his own currency look and be done with it.

This reminds me of when I was a kid at the fair with my friends about 35 years ago. We were broke and hungry and looking for dropped money
under the stands. We found a coupon that looked just like a $5 bill on one side and the coupon on the other. We had the bright idea
to send someones little brother up to the "fool the guesser for a dollar" guy and try and get $4 back in change, and if caught the plan
was to say " I guess I couldn't fool the guesser" and run. The guesser guy told the kid to stick the money down in his pocket for him
and pull out the change, so it worked. Creepy right? Back then we just thought it was great that it worked and were able to get pizza.

The moral of that story is if you print fake money coupons some kids may become delinquents and/or molested!

Here's one for you...

A couple of years ago, I tried doing something similar. I used a cheapie desktop HP printer, scanner, copier to scan in a twenty-dollar bill. About half way across the bill, the scanner stops and throws up up an error message followed with an Internet link to an anti-counterfeiting web site. Talk about big brother looking under your scanner lid...

I'm not sure how the seedy local pay-day loan place can wrap their worn-out Chevy Lumina in hundred-dollar bills, but they do.

Those seedy payday loan places are gold mines. Student where I teach works at one. In a nutshell she said they had a stellar year. Her store loaned out $75,000. She went on to explain how, through their "interest" rates and "payment" programs that paltry $75K turns into $350,000.00 within a year.

Very interesting conversation as she laid bare the inner workings of a payday loan store.

i think that some of the scanner compaines and image editing folks (Adobe Photoshop) won't complete a full scan of currency. even our basic office copiers have a no currency scanning statement on them.

Scanner no, camera yes.

And I am quite sure that is how they did their batch from the other printing place.

I have seen kids play money but a lot smaller in size, made to look like a real bill but with specimen across them. Also single sided. I assume they went through the process of getting approval...... and made in China.
