Vector program

My boss just recently bought a small notebook, its for quoting jobs on site, putting measurement on photos and such... basically just another toy. Is there a vector program that would be appropriate for this small slow running, ram-less machine. It would be great if it worked with illustrator or was a cheapo shareware.

Any suggestions?

Keep in mind a lot of these little notebooks are still faster then what was considered fast a few years ago. Maybe an older version of the design software you are already comfortable using.

mmm I've looked at the inkscape, but I haven't played around with it.

Yes an earlier version of illustrator might run as well, but he doesn't have a preference because he a beginner
