vinyl being snagged - need advice

I'm new to cutting and just received a Roland Stika SV-15. I did some practice cuts using cursive letters in Illustrator, but the vinyl seemed to be getting hooked and pulled up by the cutter in certain areas of the font. What's the problem? Is the vinyl of a poor quality? Is the blade at the wrong level, perhaps a little too deep? Is it Illustrators fault because there are too many nodes in the vector? Or is this normal for very small and sharp curves in cursive lettering? What do you more experienced people do when this problem occurs?

Honestly everything about the cut is basically fine. Even though the edges of the sharpest curves get pulled up it doesn't ruin the whole thing because they are fairly miniscule. But I did notice that these pulled up bits are being crumpled and torn. The letters I was printing are about 2 inches tall in Brush Script font and only a few curves are being pulled, not all of them. The rest of the vinyl weeded just fine. I'd really like it if this didn't happen since I want to do very precise and detailed work.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Could you possibly need a new blade?
That's the first thing that popped into my mind.

 Brush Script you say?

New blade, less downforce. How small of text are you doing? Could also be just to small or detailed. Vinyl cutting does have limitatins on size and detail. Try a 60 degree blade for finer detail cutting, slow the speed a bit, and back the force way back or you will go right through the backing.

I'll try a new blade even though this one just came out of the box, but maybe it's defective. I ordered some new ones.

I don't think I can slow the speed or change the pressure on a Roland Stika SV-15. Or if I can does someone know how? I can't find it in the manual or online anywhere.

The font I was using is Brush Script (I know it's overdone, but it was just a test) and it's about two inches in height. Brush Script has some small tight curves, which may be the problem.

I you can't change speed or downforce? I think you might want to trade up to a CriCut then.
