Most vinyl printers print vinyl just fine, they are different, but the differences are more refined then "bright & great" or not bright and great.

Maybe you could spend 5 minutes and explain EXACTLY what you wish to print, and that could help give better advice.

$15,000 to $20,000 to start for a decent printer, attendant software, and this and that. Any less than that and you're just dicking around.

Then you'll spend a year plus or minus, miles of media, and gallons of ink figuring out just how to use the all stuff you bought in any reliable and repeatable way.

These are not desktop printers on steroids. Wrangling them is far more art and understanding than science and algorithm.

Buy a Mutoh VJ-1204 48", that would be the cheapest in terms of $$$

Do you know how to use any PC software like illustrator, Photoshop or corel ???

What are you using cast for ???

How much printing are you going to do ???

How would you like the prints to be finished ???

What are they for ???

Do they need to be cut ???

Just a few question of many.

hey Charny, I'm gonna apologize for my posts, because I realized I've sorta developed a pet peeve around here, from people being lazy in their questions, making the people willing to answer have to work harder & maybe provide useless replies, because of a lack of info...

Anyway, I realize you don't know the answers... but I was assuming a lazyness keeping you from asking a more concise question... and it finally dawned on my that before I purchased sign printing equipment I didn't know much about the many material, or end user requirements...

I think an Edge printer is a very easy machine to use & maintain, and for small decals, & truck doors it could be the right tool for the job... it is not going to be as good for large format jobs, or full color banners, but it is better for many things, like white or metallic inks, and spot color printing.

Also, you want something cheap, how about telling us your budget?

If you don't have money to buy an acceptable printer, why not outsource? This will allow you to get into the stream, and learn the hows and whys of design and sales of printed vinyl.

I like our 1204 48" a lot, and I agree that if money and good quality are the only criteria, that model is the most printer for the dollar. but I do regret that we did not get the 54" model just because 48" subtraits are a little less common than 54" subtraits. Long term, the 54" may be worth the extrs $$$.

I notice when ever a newbie ask a question on here, instead of someone just answering it or go to the next thread. They always give them the "do you know anything about this or that crap" Why can't you just reply by saying "It would start off of around $15,000 and up". Instead trying to bash every person that's new to the thread.

I admit I'm guilty of short, sometimes sarcastic, replies. Maybe it's just me, but a lot of these "newbies" don't do much, if any, research on their particular inquiry. Also, the search feature here at Signs 101 works exceptionally well.

hmmm is right... I never heard of a 54" substrate..
(except my wife's fabric bolts)

Really? Finding 48" in certain materials has been an issue for us. On occasion we have had to pay a slitting charge to get 54" cut to 48" or 50".

Overall finding 48" is not THAT big of a deal, it just depends on the vendor and brand, but it would be nice to have a little oversize material when we have a customer who wants a full bleed 48" x 96" sign.

agreed about wanting a bigger printer to print bleeds...

I just thought the word 'substrates' always meant the rigid sign board we mount prints on, not the media we print on... yes 54" is a far more common media width... I have a 63' printer, so hadn't thought much about the media purchasing isue someone would have with a 48" capacity... bummer!
