OK...I know that the resounding answer is going to be "DON'T DO IT!", but let's set that aside for now


I've been reading my warranty (Mutoh factory warranty), and it appears that if I switch to NON-OEM inks during my warranty period that if any problems arise with anything that the ink touches (head, lines, capping station, pump, etc.) that Mutoh will not cover those things.

HOWEVER, the rest of the printer is still under warranty. Is that correct?

I'm considering switching to 20/20 inks (Grimco is offering them now), as they offer their own warranty on all parts of the printer that the ink touches.

Can anyone confirm that I am reading the warranty correctly?

Actually...NO! It has to be PROVEN that the 3rd party ink is what caused the problem. It cannot be assumed. This is only for the 1st year Manufacturer's warranty though. They cannot just void the warranty for using 3rd party inks. They have to "prove" the cause, even if it's to the ink delivery system.

WHY would you want to use 3rd party inks on a machine that is still under warranty?

Here's what the OEM's don't tell you.

Let's say a head board blows. Mutoh is NOT going to cover it. They'll blame the inks shorting the head, sending the short toward expensive boards.

Basically OEM will cover stickers, sheet metal and other things that would NEVER fail.

If you go through sets of inks a month than switch.
If you don't than stay with OEM til the warranty is up.

I save around 40k a year not running OEM inks. If I have to replace a blown head at 800 bucks a year early because of after market inks, I'll still sleep at night.

I would question Grimco on their parts warranty. As far as I know they are not a Mutoh dealer so I would want to know how they plan on taking care of service issues should you run into a problem. They told one of my customers they would warranty her Roland heads as long as she used their ink? She told me that was great because she would never have to buy heads again! Too good to be true?

Mutoh will not be the one trying to prove it. Customer will. That will cost a Looooooooooooot of money.

I changed to Lyson inks but the machine was over 2 years old.
Lyson inks are better than OEM at least that is my opinion.
They smell a bit more but that makes the day go by quicker...lol

You purchase a high tech device that was DESIGNED around certain components and DESIGNED and OPTIMIZED for a very particular ink system.

Ink contact components are specified based on the chemistry of the ink.
Putting a different chemistry in, is a game changer.
Incompatible chemistries will damage components.

Head ranks and droplet performance are OPTIMIZED on the physical properties of the ink.
Putting in chemicals with different physical properties, i.e. sp.gr., surface tension or pigment size, change the ability to PROPERLY form the correct size and shape droplets affecting the quality and reliability of printer output.

So yes, WHY would you take a precision designed machine and arbitrarily change its 'fuel' source?

That smell usually means stronger solvents.
That usually means that they will dry faster on the head, capping station and in the drain lines requiring more maintenance than normally specified for the printer to avoid issues.

The color gamut is typically different as well, usually meaning you cant reprint old jobs to match.

It appears that some of these folks are in business for one or two batches and then can't seem to support their customers out in the field.

All that being said, you should be careful picking 3rd party inks and understand that they will not be the same and it usually requires a bit more knowledge and care than just putting in some other cartridges.
