Load media turn on machine, get a clunk and blinking lights: eo68err cr encoder

Cleaned encoder strip, took off left side and cleaned clear plastic encoder disk turn back on and gets the same response.

This was on here a little ways back.

E068 on the 1204 is the carriage / head travel that doesn't match the encoder feed back to controller.

DIY Printer Fixing Guide
Check to make sure that the roll of material is not at the end of the roll and taped to the core. It sounds stupid but I, and many of my customers, have done this multiple times. And yes, even though this error is for the CR direction, the PF direction can affect the CR system.

Other than that: Most commonly, when the error happens right away after turning on the machine it's caused by the head lock mechanism malfunctioning. You can test it by taping the mechanism down and turning the machine on. If everything works fine, you may just need to bend the lock bracket back to a 90 degree angle. Sometime it requires a replacement and sometimes it could also be the solenoid on the head carrriage that is malfunctioning.

Next I would move on to replacing the encoder sensor. If that didn't fix it, it's time for advanced electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.

Nope, you didn't ask that. Now, I hafta find that out for ya, too ?? You want me to come up there and run it for ya, too ?? Do ya have any signs to install while I'm up that way ?? I'll bring a cordless shovel and make some holes and fill them back in.

Hey, are you gonna buy lunch ?? I like Pizza and chocolate cake with BLUE icing.

An odd one that sometimes works when the machine pulls that stunt and issues EO68 (+).... Turn off machine... disengage rollers... manually rotate the grip-roller a few revolutions both forward and backward... Restart

Well I tried all the suggested fixes and same thing, turn on printer you her a low clunk and lights start flashing with the error code.
Will try to look in manual for some more advice, thanks for the help so far.

Did you clean the sensors that read the encoder strips? The one on the carriage head can pick up as much ink mist as the strip.
If you haven't done it before:
It is on the right side of the carriage under a plastic cover held down with a single screw. I've taken mine off - wrapped a lint free cleaning cloth with a little alcohol around the edge of a credit card. Pass it between the gap in the sensor until it comes out clean. When you put it back make sure it is centered on encoder fence and not rubbing. This worked for me more than once - even after a new fence install failed.

Yes, that black plastic cover needs to come off. That screw plus the 2 on top behind the ink tubes. I think you can wiggle the other end out from under the left hand cover. If it won't just take off that cover two (it's been a while).
Once you have that off you will see the sensor sitting over the plastic encoder strip. Note the position so you can put it back in the same spot (centered over the fence). Usually there is a shadow of ink mist to use as a guide.
