When the kids desktop had the same symptoms as this laptop. The guys at HP had me run some tests. The HD tested fine. The recovery disks (2 sets) did not work. The computer said they were not compatible. That said when I took it to Best Buy, I was told the "fingerprint" on the motherboard was damaged and the desktop literally lost its identity.

It is being fixed as we speak. It was under warranty so I did not ask exactly what was it going to take to fix it.

Maybe someone with knowledge of "fingerprint" would be able to help.
