Last time I spent time on a price shopping time waster like that I replied "I hope you get what you pay for".
No, I didn't want to have to deal with him again.

be professional, and let them know that you are NOT lowering your quality.

"Thank you for contacting us for your sign needs, at this time we can not match that price as it would require a quality of product and service below what we will offer."

As has been said, (this assumes the job and/or client are important enough to spend the time on), first confirm they are comparing apples to apples, if they're not then educate them, then if they are you can then make a judgement on whether you can discount the price any, if at all.
And for The Vector Doctor, cripes, who has the time to shop around to save $2 ??!!
I get people like that, they want a price on a set of mags and then tell me they have three other prices that are cheaper, obviously they eithe have more time than money, or more time than brains.

Yeah I just had a very regular customer do something similar. I priced a job for $6 (my minimum) and he said my competition would do it for $4!

Really? $2

I know for a fact I have done several jobs and given him a good deal. Or quoted x number of dollars and ended up charging him less. I could have kept the quote but I thought I was doing something nice

What a loser...your quality of work speaks for it's self. What kind of person complains about $2?

We should all make this into a big sign on the back wall of our shops.

im pleased to say i have received the job, payment will be paid in full this afternoon and the contract will be written. Not bad of a profit margin and all printed items will have my company name in them. Im happy...

That's great. Did you have to lower your price and play their game or did they meet your demand ??

i gave them a choice, 200 off with my name in it or you have to pay 200 more without my name in them if you want a deal. They opted for my name in them, since it is for charity, so i still make a profit and i guess i win in the end. Contract will be written once she meets with me this afternoon with the FULL amount and check goes through.
