in case you studied the above here is one extra trick I use :
If (older, experienced) sales people from sign supplier companies come to you to sell their stuff, take your time, give them coffee, and ask them all details you want to know. It tickles their ego, and you learn. Tipical Win-Win situation, especially if you buy things from them.
