what shop truck to buy?

Avalanche

I got a Chev Avalanche this year, and am very happy with the "utility" of it! It looks like a short-box, but the back seats fold down, so you can put a 4 x 8 sheet in and close the tailgate. With the tonneau cover on in place and tailgate closed, its an "airtight" box/cargo area(Lol, there's even lights in the sides of box!) With the tailgate down, you can fit 10ft before its hanging over the tailgate. Tailgate is lockable (big deal if you need to leave tools unattended! ), 2 lockable "tool compartments" on the fender wells. The tonneau cover removes in 3 pieces and also will carry 250 lbs. Put the rear seats back up, and you have seating for 5 people, and it rides like a Caddy with lots of bells and whistles.

i know i tried to live without an 8ft bed for about a year. traded that useless thing in for a longbed 2500hd. the most versatile is a 6x12/7x14 enclosed trailer and any old tow vehicle...but i like pickups the most.

In 1991 we got a Dodge Caravan, short wheel base. I loved it for hauling 4x8 sheets of plyboard. When we built a shop the size of a garage, I hauled all the plyboard, drywall, lumber, what have you in that van. It was easy to remove the bench seats from it and turn it into a van for hauling. When not hauling building material, I hauled 3 kids around in it too. Oh, forgot to mention, we also hauled lots of boxes of tee shirts and business stuff. Wish I had it still. These days, I drive a Ford Ranger with a cab on the back, bought that with just a few miles on it back in 2001. I love driving it, but it's only a 6' bed and with the wheel wells, won't handle the 4x8 sheets as easily as the Dodge Caravan did. The big drawback on the Dodge Caravan though, we went through several transmissions, don't know if they still have issues like that with the Caravans, but have had no problems with my truck.

i'd shop moderately on the truck, firm to have an 8ft. bed (6ft. never cuts it). 4x8's will fit between the wheel-wells and 5x10's will sit atop them but should ride fine with the tailgate down.

save a few bucks on the truck, and invest into a trailer to do the rest of the heavy-lifting that you could never fit into a truck.

I've always wanted an old UPS truck, but once UPS is done with them, they get stripped and destroyed :(
