Who offset prints here? Question on charges

Hey guys, I have a question for those who do offset printing whether it be off a xerox, xante or other machine that prints post cards, flyers, business cards, brochures etc IN HOUSE.

Example: We all know customers come in with some crappy card or flyer from vista print and want it redone nicely. You either have to re create it or design a fresh look.

You can PM me if you want to but what do you generally charge for design work on things that need offset printed in house?

Me personally, i would charge my hourly but i am not sure if that particular business charges low end prices for things vs sign design.

I have a customer who does this printing and i do the design work for them but i don't think they are charging enough at all which hurts me on my end when i am doing it for a portion of what they are charging because i am wholesaling to them the design work. I typically am getting 65% of what they retail but when it's not priced accordingly it hurts my pocket.

I look back at the invoices and sometimes they are charging $12 for something that may take 1/2 hour but sometimes they will charge $100 for something that will take 1 hour. It's all over the board.

Thanks!

Yes and no. If I'm doing design/layout I charge $90/hour in 15 minute increments.

That being said, I'm trying to work a design service from Affinity into my order workflow and stop doing design inhouse.

why not charge a flat per hr. fee for the design work and let the seller worry if they are not making enough?

Personally it takes the same amount of time to do a "wholesale" design as it does a "retail" so why the discount at all?

This is a great example of what separates a designer from a sign maker. Typically I never charge anything less than an hour for good clients and new clients it an hour. That typically includes one revision, not a redesign.

Biz cards $75
Qtr page flyers $125
Half page flyers $225

Yes that is expensive but we have good designers on staff and it helps weed out the clients that don't appreciate good graphic design.

We charge $40/hr. Mostly because we don't consider ourselves graphic designers. Most of the work is just simple type setting not real "design" work. Graphic designers in our area charge $80-100/hr. Plus there is everyone else out there who has a computer and calls them self a graphic designer.

Also, if we get most of our money from the offset printing and copying. If you aren't making money of the printing than you should be charging full price for your design time.

When I worked at a printing company (before I left for the sign industry), our regular hourly design rate was $75/hr in 15 minute increments. Most BusCard print jobs that were quoted to clients (without starting from scratch) included 1/2 hr in the price, with additional design/proofs extra.
