why is it so hard to make people understand the simplest things

Case in point.......

Get a call from a customer ( large corporate) They need a new plexiglass vehicle number for a locomotive and they tell me how high this particular number is and then say it is 5" wide. I ask, which number was 5" wide?
They say they all were... I pause grit my teeth and explain to him that every number has a different width.... seems pretty basic to me.... duhh


Second customer calls and has been waiting for me to make 10 sets of cut lettering for 5 new trucks. He was supposed to give me the working area that I had and I was left a message that it was 18" x 36".


Maybe if it was a Savanah or a Safari, but this is an International tractor trailer and there is no way that there is 18" x 36" clearance to do what he wants. So again I said to him, if I cut these and they don't fit don't come crying to me. Do you actually have the clearance of that size.

Now he hesitates and says he will measure one tomorrow.

I take it he was guessing the first time like it isn't important these days not to waste money.... sheesh...

Not so duhh. The number set in most every typeface is mono-spaced. This is so that they will line up when set in columns. While a '1' is certainly narrower than a '0' generally they occupy the same character spacing. If you tightly kern multi-digit numbers they seldom look right.

I don't agree, besides if he measure a 1 at 5" wide and I typeset it using the 0 as 5" wide, then this new number will be completely wrong.
