Widescreen monitor proportions

I am planning on purchasing a larger monitor for my pc. Seeing that most of the monitors are widescreen, what is the solution for viewing your work proportionally correct instead of expanded.

I was told its the video card that needs to be replaced. Even when changing the resolution on the screen, it stills dosen't look right.

Any suggestions?

The default resolution for the monitor is usually fine. An outdated video card that does not support certain resolutions will distort the image. Look up the supported resolutions for your current card. I would assume most recent cards will support wide screens
