I have a 4 year old amd sempron computer. It does what I ask of it, albeit slowly. After a little researching I found out that I can upgrade the processor to Athlon 64 x2 (dual core). Both processors fit socket am2 940 .

Present specs: amd Sempron 3200+, 80gb hd, 1.5 ram, 256 video, XP

    Upgrade: amd Athlon 64 x2 5500+, 500gb hd, 3.5 ram , 256 video and XP remains.

The upgrade can be done for $200. Would it be worth it ? Would there be that much more performance?

Yeah; faster processing is nice. More RAM is super nice ... 1.5GB is tiny by today's standards. Even 3.5 is a bit limited, but definitely way better and worth the 200 bucks, IMO.

In fact, everything processor and memory related is worth it and then some ... better and cheaper has reached a level of stupid good.
