So, as of yesterday if you Googled "sign company charlotte nc"
I simply did not show up ANYWHERE. Maybe like page 25 if that. And of course on the PPC area.

I have been working very hard lately trying to figure out how to change that because I simply can't hire SEO specialists as they are ridiculously expensive.

Anyway as of today I am on page two of that keyword.

Doubt that is a big deal to anyone, but I have been working very hard to understand the ins and outs of Google, and it is finally paying off.

I haven't checked other keywords yet, but I have been specifically working on the keyword "sign company".

OK that's the probably not so exciting news. Carry on.

kudos !
SEO is hard work, but sometimes it works very misteriously.
Have someone else google the same keywords, because google's data centers return different results based on their location

It has worked very well for us. We do 100% of our advertising budget in internet advertising. I have done some pay per click while I build our organic presence. If I may recommend some very good books.

Get into Bed with Google by Jon Smith
How to Make Money with Social Media by Jamie Turner
Marketing in the Moment by Michael Tasner

Don't be afraid of the first one. He tells you how to effectively utilize pay per click, but he also gives you a lot of great information on how Google utilizes your information on your website to build SEO credit.

My best advice is set up a Blog hosted on your own website. If it is hosted by Wordpress or someone else, they get the SEO credit, not you. The more pages you have on your website with good content the more SEO credit you get. Hint: Every new blog counts as a new webpage. Blog, Blog, Blog using your keywords in the title and in your body text.

I have been working on this for about a year and just halved our Pay per Click budget and guess what... the hit stats are holding. Probably in another 6 months, I may be able to cut it altogether.

I will say that we also host our website on Hubspot. It isn't cheap, but it is effective. You have total control of your own website, but you get a ton of inbound marketing tools and all the free webinar education you have time to attend and more. I just used Hubspot's email blast tool today to send a one year anniversary email out to ~800 folks. It went out around 4:30 today and by 5:00 we had 4 inquiries about jobs. This service is included in the cost of Hubspot.

Good luck. It is a mysterious realm, but some reading and a lot of work and viola! it does work!

Results will vary based on a number of things including location and previous visits and searches.

So number 1 for you could mean #25 for me.

GG and I played around a bit with this for CHEAP which is actually growing quite nice as far as organic goes.

I've invested large amounts of the past few years of my life working to understand google as much as possible & have had the good fortune to speak with, strategize & work with some people who in my opinion are damn near seo & internet geniuses.

all of my 'alarms' go off when I hear someone say 'they've figured out google' or 'this is how it works' etc. Granted there are practices that will generate semi predictable results that most of us are aware of. But reality is that search engines are very complex, ever changing & evolving tools that force all of us to stay sharp, keep pressing & evolving yourself or you will QUICKLY be over run.

heck I've even taken workshops put on by ex employees of google & not a one of them would even claim that they completely understand how 'it all' works. To quote someone I respect greatly who understands this all better than anyone I know who often says essentially all of the varius things we do that generate online results 'they are all just pieces of a big puzzle'.

We show up high on our keywords so we tried adwords with google and that put us in a number of spots with them, both ad and non-ad and our calls picked up dramatically. Not sure it was worth $200 for the 3 weeks we did it but it did make a difference in calls.

If you want a quick way to short-circuit local search (which is what you're after) spend some time optimizing your Google Places page. Here are the very basics:
a) make sure all info is accurate
b) get to 5 reviews (beg customers) --this is important
c) upload some photos of your work
d) Point your google places web link to an interior landing page, not your website home page. Optimize that page for the audience you know will land there (plus this gives you more click analytics). If you don't do this Google will remove your normal website SERP listing if your Google Places listing appears up top, so by pointing to an interior page you can have two high listings on a local search page.

Mostly for a small sign company beyond places listing you want to devote your effort into getting your on-page seo "decent" and then getting into as many local directories as you can. Backlinks are everything but don't be spammy. ~30 solid backlinks will outrank most local competitors in short order as most sign shops have absolutely terrible websites and have never built backlinks. If you do have a strong local competitor, do competitor research to see where they're getting their backlinks from and jump on that bandwagon. Know that metatag="" is worthless and metadescription="" isn't used for ranking but IS seen by potential visitors, so write it to convert not to rank. Spend most of your time optimizing on-page on your titles, h tags and internal anchor links. Also remember to actually do keyword research, don't waste your time optimizing for search phrases you're just guessing at.

That's about all you really need to know without turning your job into SEO instead of signs.
