Wrapping a sphere?

Not sure if this is the right section but....
I'm pretty sure that I saw on here some time ago that somebody had wrapped a sphere with vinyl. My first thought is to cut the vinyl like the pieces of a basket ball or even a baseball. The question is, is there a formula for figuring out how to make a template for different sized spheres?
I'd open to any input you have.

an Interrupted Sinusoidal map is what you need to print and die cut. Follow that link to understand the benefit of the frequency of lobes. Depending on your design you should be able to find a happy medium for the job.
