Check and make sure you don't have any build up of adhesive on the platen anywhere. I've had materials that had adhesive on the edges of the roll that then transferred onto the platen over a period of time. What happens is that build up can prevent the material from advancing like it should...
Just get nice aluminum ladders and you will be fine. I started out with fiberglass many years ago and ran into the same problems. We switched to aluminum over 10 years ago and the same ladders are still going strong. I've been on jobsites just about everywhere and have never had my ladders...
I applied last Friday and the entire amount I calculated from my payroll ($66k)showed up in my account yesterday. The process was quick and painless from my experience.
In my opinion this is definitely caused by defective ink from HP. I have seen this exact problem several times (especially black). I've switched over to using Bordeaux ink and ever since doing so I don't have this splatter problem.
