I've striped high school basketball and volleyball floors down through the years. The flooring contractor or the school supplied the diagrams. On wood floors, no special paint was required. We always used lettering enamels, double coating certain colors. On the rubberized floors a special paint...
I think this is a good policy.
Make it difficult for people to pirate your work. If it's time-consuming to pirate, many will not bother.
Does anyone use watermarks? The clipart companies do.
Of course, nothing is foolproof, or pirate-proof.
I remember a shop that had a note on their sketches...
This would be a good question to ask a trademark lawyer.
My gut reaction is that we are not expected to go out of our way to police the actions of our clients. When a customer wants a truck lettered, do we ask if it's a stolen vehicle? How would we even know for sure if the client has the right...
I think there is some nice design work posted to this thread. Both the original layout and Skyhigh's revison are pretty good.
The original design is more playful, to be sure, but I would not have a problem taking my puppy to a clinic with a playful-looking sign. Apparently, though, this dog...
I'm surprised only one person has mentioned running a cable.
This is by far the easiest and quickest way to install banners to masonry walls. In fact, I recommend it for installing banners anywhere. Even between posts.
Here are the advantages on masonry:
You drill four holes per one banner...
A 20-foot application can be done by one person.
Pre-mask and center hinge. Wet application with soap and water only. No solvent.
We did 4x90-foot, full coverage overlays at one place I worked (producing back-lit awnings). Translucent vinyl with a 6-inch stripe (void) running the entire length...
This string reminds me of how much times have changed. Or how old I have become.
Lettering paper banners was always a nice change. It was fast and loose, with minimum brain work required. Big, loaded brushes. Long, rapid strokes.
It took some time to get used to the paint at first—One Shot...
The Grip Flex brand line was discontinued by Akzo Nobel in December of 2013. There may still be supplies of the paint left in some places, assuming you can get reducers for it.
The Akzo replacement is called Grip Gard BC translucent paint. The toners are actually the same as their regular Grip...
This is a good point.
I once coated out a small bulletin (10x20) at the edge of a used car lot. The dealer moved all the cars except a black one at the far edge. It wouldn't start. It was probably 200 feet away. We thought we were safe. When I was finished the car was covered with tiny white...
I would power wash the surface before doing anything.
If the old paint is still holding up, it can serve as a base coat. If you are going to hand letter it, coat it out white first. Then use pounce patterns and cut in the black. It's much easier than trying paint white letters over a black...
I agree. On smaller sized light tables, glass is nice. Consider backspraying the glass with translucent white paint or laminate the back side with translucent vinyl. This keeps you from staring at the light source, which used to give me headaches.
I worked at a shop for a couple years that did...
Inkscape is excellent at tracing in my opinion.
When I use it, I let it trace by colors (you determine how many) The separate color traces it produces are layered on top of one another. Simply separate them by ungrouping and choose which is best, or weld two or three together to get a good...
I assume the sign in the picture is not small. An eight or ten foot diameter cabinet on top?
Plastic trim cap is not a suitable retainer for a face like this.
Use .080" aluminum to fabricate a retainer. I would cut the face of the retainer with a sabre saw by hand. Then weld the return to the...
I frequently use 1-inch aluminum square tube for an internal frame. I then skin it with panels front and back using Lord adhesive. I like .063" aluminum for the skins, but .080" would add some weight if desired. Aluminum composite faces could be a cheaper version.
The advantage to this...
Inkit,
I understand your method of pricing using sketches as a tool. This practice is now widespread and common. Both our sales people do this, so they are always waiting on me for drawings. One of them makes dummy drawings on occasion when he can't wait for me. Then when he closes the deal, or...
ASI and Best Sign Systems are both companies that produce ADA-compliant interior signs, directories and architectural signs.
We bid against them at times since a large part of our work is interior ADA stuff for schools and hospitals.

I agree that there is no easy answer to this problem. And the problem seems to be everywhere.
In the old days, we wouldn't even think of doing a color rendering for a 4x8 real estate sign. A nice drawing was for nice jobs only. Everybody else got a quickie pencil thumbnail sketch while they...
We obtain permits from over a dozen municipalities in the Kansas
City area. So we pull lots of permits on a regular basis. Each town is a little different. Kansas City, Missouri, has an exceptionally streamlined permit process. They have half a dozen people processing permits all day long, and...
