  1. Suggestions When exporting to .pdf, What preset do you use to send to your RIP?

For vector objects CMYK is fine but for bitmaps always send RGB at ~1/4 the resolution you're printing. I try never to send a PDF, there's always a subtle but nasty color shift. I'll always try to send an RGB jpg with the rendering intent for bitmaps set to 'Perceptual'. A RIP will sort out RGB...
  2. Gradient issue

Add a bit of noise to the gradient. A 'bit' is somewhere less than 10%.
  3. professional help ... lol :p

For cut vinyl have black, white, red, blue in both cast and calendared. For print vinyl, calendared for decals and assorted short term stuff. Cast for everything else. In a pinch you can get away with using your cast white cut[ing] vinyl for printing requiring cast vinyl.
  4. Pantone color book?

If you're printing then print a Pantone chart and use that. What comes out of the printer is the truth. If you're going for cut vinyl, use the vinyl manufacturer's swatch folder. Pantone is for clients to tell you a number that they want, not for you to try to match the client's colors.
  5. Vinyl for pads

High tack and low energy in this context are pretty much the same thing. It's not low energy vinyl, it's vinyl for low energy surfaces. I used Oracal 3164HT on some mudflaps that absolutely nothing would stick to and, as far as I know, it's still on 3 years and counting.
  6. crazy question

Not Euler, some other guy who, I believe, is still alive. I think the school was U Penn but don't hold me to that. Euler showed possibilities for traversing a path depends on the number of nodes with either an even or odd number of paths leading to/away from it. See 'Bridges of Konigsberg'.
  7. Looking for old version of FlexiSign

I picked up something called 'SignCut Pro', a plug in or add on or whatever for Corel last year. It handles plain old vanilla cutting and contour cutting using auto reg marks just fine. Like anything you have to get used to it and become familiar with it. Other than issues with manual...
  8. Metallic gold vinyl

I print on metallic vinyl all of the time. I use silver, there's no reason to use gold or any other color. If you need a gold color just print it. I use either Oracal 951 M Silver Lake or 3M 180mC Satin Aluminum. Neither of these is advertised as being printable but it's vinyl so with...
  9. Looking for old version of FlexiSign

I too am looking for 8.5 or 8.6. I have Flexi 8.5 or 6, I'll have to look, but last year when I moved to a new desktop somehow the dongle was damaged. I can, and do, run Production Manager by dropping in JPG files for printing but I cannot run Flexi. I've been using a cutting plug in for Corel...
  10. crazy question

Way back when I was working for a the research division of a large company I was part of a merry band that was trying to solve this very problem. The project was to create a manufacturing scheduling system that minimized idle time for the various processes involved. Early on we determined that...
  11. crazy question

Most plotters [and the attendant software] accommodate a number of plot sequence settings. One is simply the order in which the elements are received. Another is to plot everything in an arbitrary sized area, usually set to somewhere in the neighborhood of a 10" square, and then move on. This...
  12. Edward Jones

Small claims court or, failing that, big kids court. Get a judgement then get a lien, shut them down. You will get paid post haste. I know this because I've personally seen it done. A fellow I worked for did exactly that and, for a few minutes, shut down Pacific Southwest Airlines [PSA] when his...
  13. Discussion What's the most common design mistake you see made in sign design?

Sorry for the misinterpretation. I thought that was a bit of crud on my screen.
  14. Discussion What's the most common design mistake you see made in sign design?

I find Helvetica and all of it's cousins to be completely lacking in character. I do signs, not annual reports. If I need to add text merely to meet some requirement or another I'll go for one of the sleep inducing sans serif faces. Other than that, not so much.
  15. Discussion What's the most common design mistake you see made in sign design?

In my best Cousin Vinny voice "You're serious?" You've never done any and lettering? All round top and bottom characters extend slightly above and below the top and base lines. Characters like 'S O Q G C U 2 3 5 6 8 9 0'. This is because these characters do not have sufficient visual weight on...
  16. Discussion What's the most common design mistake you see made in sign design?

I've been setting type in one way or another since I was a kid back before the most of your parents were born. From photo type setting to hard type in a stick from a drawer. If you've never been around hard type then most likely you'll not understand 'stick' and 'drawer'. Regardless, in all that...
  17. Printed Graphics do not line up

Or don't use a take up at all and not waste the necessary leader. Or tape a piece of scrap to the media to use as a leader. Whatever you do do it the same for all the panels.
  18. Any lighting tips for weeding vinyl - especially white - I can not see cut lines

If not a pounce bag then a bright light shining across the media can be a boon.
  19. Contour Cutting Window Perf

I do exactly that, I print a gray box outline, a situation forced upon me by an eclectic mix of software if I'm printing on non-white media. Mostly metallic silver and manual registration marks don't work with my setup. Before you start, register the vinyl at some landmark on your printer. I use...
  20. Tool Crash Cart

Why all of the pipe wrenches? One seldom needs more than two of them.
